Three Monkeys

Three Monkeys - Due Nov 26th by the end of the school day.

This is one of my all time favorites.  All that is required is some careful reading, a little thinking and simple math will solve this problem.

Three monkeys walk into a motel on the Planet of the Apes and ask for a room. The desk clerk says a room costs 30 bananas, so each monkey pays 10 bananas towards the cost.

Later, the clerk realizes he made a mistake, that the room should have been 25 bananas. He calls the bellboy over and asks him to refund the other 5 bananas to the 3 monkeys. The bellboy, not wanting to make a mess dividing the 5 bananas three ways, decides to lie about the price, refunding each monkey 1 banana, keeping the other 2 bananas for himself. Ultimately each monkey paid 9 bananas towards the room and the bellboy got 2 bananas, for a total of 29 bananas. But the original charge was 30 bananas.

Where did the extra 1 banana go?

  1. There is no missing banana because 25 bananas go to the room each monkey got 1 banana which equals 28 and the boy got 2 bananas equaling out to 30 bananas.

  2. there's no missing banana, because 25 bananas go the motel and 2 to the boy, because the 27 bananas are divided, the "missing banana" is a faulty reasoning in the puzzle's setup.

  3. they did not pay a total of 29 bannans they paided 28 bannas and the bellboy has the other 2 making 30 bannas in total

This riddle really is meant to mess with your head. $30 is the actual sum of the money that the three monkeys paid, not 29. Including the money the clerk has $25 the sum would be a smaller amount the monkeys could have paid $9 × 3 monkeys = $27. Plus the additional money that the clerk would not have needed (the 5 dollars) the monkey would have paid that smaller amount $27 paid - $25 = $2 The $27 already includes the bellhop's tip. So the three monkeys' paid for their room, already including the bellhop's tip, is $27. Each of the 3 monkeys has $1 in their pocket, totaling to $3. So adding $3 to $27 you get the sum of $30.

  5. Y.F Period 1 They paid 30 and they were supposed to get 5 back and that's the 10 original banana and they got each 3 and it would be 27 and he kept 2 to himself which would be 29 and they got 1/3 ,1/3,and 1/3. Which equals 1 and the other banana went to the bellboy.

there was 3 monkey and they were suppose to get 5 bananas back because they paid 30 but they were only suppose to pay 25

each monkeys were suppose to pay 8.3 which is 25 divided 3

    and 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3
equals 3/3 which is = 1 so the extra banana went to the bell boy

Initial payment: The three monkeys pay 30 bananas in total 10 bananas each. The desk clerk realizes the price should have been 25 bananas, so there are 5 bananas to be refunded. The bellboy refunds 1 banana to each monkey, keeping 2 bananas for himself. Each monkey ends up paying 9 bananas (10 - 1 banana refunded). So, the total money paid by the monkeys is:
    3 × 9 = 27
Out of the 27 bananas, 25 bananas go to the motel for the room charge, and the remaining 2 bananas are kept by the bellboy. Because of this there is no extra banana. The 27 bananas account for: 25 bananas for the room, 2 bananas for the bellboy.
In conclusion: The confusion comes from trying to add the bellboy's 2 bananas to the 27. Instead, the 27 includes the 2 bananas the bellboy kept. There should be missing banana. :)

  10. there is no extra banana because each monkey paid 9$ towards the room meaning when the bell boy gave back the money he didn't have any leftover N.D p3

  11. AK PER 3 there is no extra banana. there is no extra banana because the monkeys paid there 10 bananas each but when they make the mistake they gave them back 1 each which means they really paid 9. so the bus boy keeps 2 because he didn't want to do the math between dividing it between 3 people.

    -1(guest 1 goes into pocket)
    -1(guest 2 goes into pocket)
    -1(guest 3 goes into pocket)

    =27 bananas
    -2(bellyboy kept)

=25 bananas left over(equals the room cost)
So there is no extra banana because the belly boy kept 2 bananas. Each monkey(3) gets 1 dollar back. For a total of 5 bananas that should be refunded. We add those 5 bananas that came from the belly boy, and the monkey to the total cost of the room(25 bananas). Which gives us thirty bananas. When they throw in that they paid 9 bananas each monkey, plus the two of the belly boy, you get 29. Which give us remainder of 1 banana.

  17. There is no missing banana. The riddle tricks you by adding the bellboy's 2 bananas to the 27 bananas the monkeys paid, which makes it look like something is missing.

There is no extra 1 banana because if the bellboy gave back 3 bananas from the 30 bananas and kept 2 for himself then the total number of bananas is 30.

    3 + 2 = 5

    30 - 5 = 25

    30 - 3 = 27

The 2 bananas that the bellboy kept are already included in the 27 bananas.

But if we were to take those 3 bananas back from the 3 monkeys then it would be

    27 + 3 = 30

Therefore, the monkeys have 3 bananas and the bellboy has 27 which totals 30.

  22. JM, The extra 1 banana is a result of the incorrect logic in the riddle. The bellboy took 2 and was left with 27, because they paid 29.

  24. JB p6 25 bananas went to the motel for the room but the monkeys paid 30
2 bananas went to the bellboy that he kept out of 5 cs he gave 1 to each monkey
    That adds up to 25 + 2 = 27 bananas.
bellboy's 2 bananas to the 27 bananas which makes it seem like there’s a missing banana. But really, the 27 bananas already include the bellboy's 2 bananas.
    27+3=30
So, there’s no missing banana! Everything adds up just fine 30 bananas total.
